Sphincterotome is used for endoscopic cannulation of the biliary ductal system and sphincterotomy. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) requires selectively cannulation of the common bile and pancreatic duct. To facilitate selective cannulation, sphincterotomes can be used. After the cut has been made then the desired endoscopic accessory can be inserted through it, toward the common bile duct.
